Ed Blaskey, who led a small business and community lending team for European American Bank, was at his desk in Uniondale in 2001 when the call came. Citibank had just announced its plan to take over EAB and his phone was ringing, but not from concerned customers.
A recruiter wanted to know whether Blaskey would be interested in talking with a bank that planned to expand onto Long Island.
Blaskey listened as the recruiter described Cherry Hill, N.J.-based Commerce Bank’s intentions and agreed to meet with Commerce.
